Your Medicare Questions Answered

u

What is Medicare and who qualifies for it?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people 65 and older, or those under 65 with certain disabilities or chronic conditions.

u

When can I enroll in Medicare?

You can enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period (3 months before and after your 65th birthday), or during the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7). There are also many special enrollment periods that may be available to enable plan changes throughout the year.

u

What if I need help choosing the right plan for my needs?

Desert Insured offers free personalized consultations to help you review plans and pick the one that fits your health and budget needs.

u

Can I have both Medicare and employer insurance?

Yes, in many cases you can have both. Medicare typically becomes the secondary payer if you’re actively working and covered by an employer plan.

u

What Is Original Medicare?

Original Medicare—also called traditional Medicare—includes Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance), and is administered directly by the federal government.

  • Part A helps pay for inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, some home health services, and hospice.

  • Part B covers outpatient care such as doctor visits, preventive services, diagnostic tests, durable medical equipment, and more.

u

What is Medigap?

Medigap, or Medicare Supplement Insurance, helps pay for out-of-pocket costs not covered by Original Medicare, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

u

What’s the difference between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare?

Original Medicare includes Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical). Medicare Advantage (Part C) is offered by private insurance companies and often includes a prescription drug coverage.

u

How do I get my Medicare number?

If you already have a Medicare number but can’t find it, visit MyMedicare.gov and log into your account or call 1-800-633-4227 to retrieve it. If you don’t have a Medicare number yet, you can apply by visiting the  Social Security Administration’s Medicare page or call 1-800-772-1213 for assistance.

u

Are there penalties if I don’t sign up for Medicare?

  • Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)

    • Typically, most people receive premium-free Part A if they or their spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years.

    • If you’re not eligible for premium-free coverage and delay enrolling, you may face a 10% penalty on your monthly premium, which you’ll pay for twice the number of years you delayed enrollment.

    Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)

    • If you delay enrollment and don’t have qualifying coverage (like through an employer), you’ll incur a 10% penalty added to your Part B premium for every full 12-month period you delay.

    • This penalty must be paid for as long as you remain enrolled in Part B.

Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)

    • If you go 63 days or more without Part D or other creditable drug coverage after your Initial Enrollment Period, you’ll incur a penalty.

    • The penalty is 1% of the national base beneficiary premium for each month you’re without coverage—rounded to the nearest $0.10 and added to your monthly premium for as long as you have Part D.

u

Does original Medicare have premiums or deductibles?

Original Medicare may have premiums and deductibles which often change annually. Please discuss any questions or concerns regarding premiums, deductibles or penalties with your licensed insurance agent.

u

Do I need a Prescription Drug Plan (Part D)?

If you take any medications, a Part D plan can help cover the costs. Without it, you may face late enrollment penalties if you delay signing up.
